Levoit Core 300S vs 400S: which Levoit air purifier should you buy?
Match the purifier to the room size. A bigger model on a low setting is quieter than a small one flat out.
Levoit Core 300S vs 400S comes down to room size. The Core 300S suits a bedroom or a small living room, and the Core 400S suits a large living room or an open-plan space: Levoit rates the 400S at 433 cubic metres of clean air an hour against 258 for the 300S. Both have an air quality sensor, an auto mode and app control. The Core Mini and 200S are for small bedrooms, and the 600S is for very large rooms. Levoit Core 300S vs 400S: the differences
- Power. Levoit quotes a clean air delivery rate (CADR) of 258m³ an hour for the Core 300S and 433m³ for the Core 400S. Higher CADR means the air in a room is cleaned more often.
- Room size. Levoit rates the 300S for rooms up to 108m² (once an hour, or 54m² twice an hour) and the 400S for up to 180m². For allergies, aim for the air to be cleaned several times an hour, so a smaller room than the maximum.
- Both have a 3-stage HEPA filter, a PM2.5 air quality sensor, an auto mode that changes the fan speed, a quiet sleep mode and the VeSync app.
- Filters. The 300S takes four filter types: Original, Pet Allergy, Toxin Absorber and Mould. Check which filters are sold for the 400S on its listing.
How to choose the right size
- Measure the room: length times width in metres gives the floor area. A 4m by 3.5m bedroom is 14m².
- For hay fever or allergies, choose a purifier rated for at least twice your room size, so it cleans the air several times an hour on a quiet setting.
- Running a larger purifier on a low speed is quieter than running a small one on high.

Filters
- Genuine Core 300 and 300S replacement filter
- Levoit Core 300S Toxin Absorber filter (smoke and odours)
- Levoit Core 400S replacement filter
Filters are model-specific. Levoit recommends replacing them every 6 to 8 months, or sooner with pets or smoke. Paid links to Amazon.co.uk.
Air purifier for smokers
A HEPA filter traps smoke particles, but the smell comes from gases that HEPA does not catch. For tobacco smoke, look for a filter with a lot of activated carbon, such as Levoit's Toxin Absorber filter for the Core 300 and 300S.
Choose a purifier rated for well above the room size and run it on a higher speed while smoking and for a while afterwards. Filters fill faster with smoke, so budget for replacements.
No air purifier makes second-hand smoke safe. Opening a window or smoking outside does more.
For pets, allergies and mould
Pets: the Pet Allergy filter is aimed at dander and fur. Run the purifier in the room where the pet sleeps.
Hay fever: keep windows closed on high-pollen days and run the purifier in the bedroom overnight on sleep mode.
Mould: a purifier catches spores in the air but does not fix damp. Pair it with a dehumidifier in a damp room.
