Best dehumidifier for drying clothes in 2026

Look for a laundry mode, the right capacity, and a room with the door shut.

A dehumidifier dries washing by pulling the moisture out of the air, and it stops that moisture ending up on your windows and walls. For laundry you want a compressor model with a laundry mode, sized for the room. A 200W model such as the Pro Breeze OmniDry 12L costs about 5p an hour to run at the current price cap.

What to look for

  • A laundry mode. It runs the machine continuously at full fan speed instead of stopping when the room reaches a target humidity.
  • Capacity. A 10 or 12 litre model suits a flat, a box room or a small utility room. A 20 litre model suits a larger room or a household that washes most days, and it is bigger and louder.
  • The type. Compressor dehumidifiers work best in heated rooms, which is where most people dry washing. For an unheated garage or conservatory you need a desiccant model instead.
  • Drainage. The tank fills quickly with a full load of wet washing. A drain hose lets it run without you emptying it.

How to get clothes dry faster

  • Use the smallest room you can and shut the door and windows.
  • Space the washing out so air can move between items.
  • Point the airflow at the clothes and use the laundry mode.
  • Give the washing an extra spin in the machine first. It is the cheapest way to remove water.

What it costs to run

At the Ofgem price cap of 26.32p per kWh (1 October to 31 December 2026, average for Direct Debit customers), a 200W dehumidifier costs about 5p an hour. Six hours is about 32p and ten hours is about 53p. A compressor cycles on and off, so real use is at or below that.

Larger models draw more power. Check the wattage on the listing and multiply it by your own unit rate. Our running costs guide compares a dehumidifier with a heated airer and a tumble dryer.

10 to 12 litres a day suits a flat or a small room. 20 litres suits a larger room or frequent loads.
