The 30-second verdict
A 12 litre compressor dehumidifier is the standard size for flats and small to medium houses. This one measures the room's humidity and switches itself on and off to hold your target, which keeps running costs down. It also has a laundry mode for drying clothes indoors. For a cold, unheated space, a desiccant dehumidifier is the better type.

What actually matters
Compressor or desiccant
Compressor models are cheaper to run in normal heated rooms. They lose efficiency in the cold, which is where desiccant models do better.
The "per day" figure
Extraction rates are measured in warm, very humid test conditions. In a typical UK home you will collect less, which is normal.
The drawbacks
- All compressor dehumidifiers make a fridge-like hum.
- A 2L tank needs emptying daily in a damp home unless you fit the drain hose.
- It treats one area at a time, so doors need to be open or the unit moved.
12L or 20L?
A 12L model suits flats and smaller homes or a single problem room. A 20L model suits larger or damper houses and dries laundry faster, and it is bigger and louder.
Buying it on Black Friday 2026
Dehumidifier demand rises sharply as the weather turns cold and wet. Popular models have sold out in past winters, so this is one to buy when you see a fair price. Black Friday is on Friday 27 November 2026. We do not list prices here because they change by the hour. See our Black Friday checklist.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to run?
It depends on your electricity tariff and how long it runs. The humidity sensor switches it off when the target is reached, which limits the cost.
Can it dry clothes?
Yes, it has a laundry mode. Put it in a closed room with the airer for the best result.
Where should I put a dehumidifier?
Centrally, such as on a landing or in a hallway, with internal doors open. For a single damp room, put it in that room with the door shut.
Does it stop mould?
Lowering humidity makes mould less likely to grow. It will not remove existing mould or fix the cause of damp.
