Best heated clothes airer in 2026

A cover makes more difference than extra watts. So does putting it in a small room.

The best heated clothes airer for most homes is a 3-tier model with a cover, such as the Lakeland Dry:Soon, because the cover traps the warmth and dries a full load far faster. A winged airer from Status or Minky is cheaper and better for hanging shirts and bedding. A typical 300W heated clothes airer costs about 8p an hour to run at the Ofgem price cap of 26.32p per kWh. 3-tier or winged heated clothes airer?

  • 3-tier airers stack three shelves of heated rails, so they hold a full load (usually up to 15kg) on a small footprint. They work best with a fitted cover over the top.
  • Winged airers open out flat with drop-down wings, like a normal clothes horse. Better for long items, shirts on hangers and bedding, but they take more floor space and lose more heat.
  • Compact or mini airers suit a flat or a single person's washing.

What to look for

  • Wattage. Most heated airers use 200 to 300W, about the same as a few old light bulbs. The heated rails get warm, not hot.
  • A cover. Most makers sell a fitted cover, and some bundles include one. It keeps the warm air around the clothes instead of heating the room.
  • Capacity and drying space. Look at both the kilograms and the metres of rail. 21m across three tiers is a full load.
  • Wheels and folding depth. Wheels help if you move it between rooms; a flat fold matters if you store it in a cupboard.
  • A timer or thermostat. Handy so it switches off without you.

How to dry clothes faster on a heated airer

  • Use the cover, or drape a sheet over a 3-tier airer. This is the single biggest improvement.
  • Spin the washing on the highest speed your clothes allow, so there is less water to dry.
  • Use a small room with the door shut, and run a dehumidifier in the same room if you have one, so the moisture does not end up on the windows.
  • Spread items out. Thick towels and jeans dry faster with space around them.

Heated airer, dehumidifier or tumble dryer?

A heated airer is the cheapest to buy and costs pennies an hour. A dehumidifier dries washing and stops condensation. A tumble dryer is fastest but costs the most to run. Our comparison of all three works out the running costs.

Questions people ask

What is the best heated clothes airer in the UK?

The Lakeland Dry:Soon 3-Tier is the best known, with 21m of drying space and 300W heating. The BLACK+DECKER 3-Tier with Cover and Wheels offers the same format with the cover included.

How much does a heated clothes airer cost to run?

A 300W model costs about 8p an hour and a 230W model about 6p an hour at the Ofgem price cap of 26.32p per kWh (October to December 2026).

Are heated clothes airers energy efficient?

They use far less electricity than a tumble dryer, usually 200 to 300W. They take longer to dry clothes, so use a cover and a small room to keep drying times down.

Is the Lakeland Dry:Soon worth it?

If you dry washing indoors through the winter, yes: it holds a full load and costs pennies an hour. Get the cover, which makes it much quicker.

Which Minky heated clothes airer is best?

The Minky SureDRI Winged Heated Airer holds up to 16kg on 12m of space and takes clothes on hangers. Minky says it costs 8p an hour to run.

Can I leave a heated airer on overnight?

Follow the maker's instructions. Many people run them for several hours; a model with a timer switches itself off. Never cover the airer with anything the instructions do not allow.
