Best VR headset in 2026: Meta Quest 3S, Quest 3, PS VR2 and Pico
Most people should start with a Meta Quest 3S. Buy PS VR2 only if you own a PS5 and want its games.
The best VR headset for most people is the Meta Quest 3S, because it is standalone (no console or PC needed), has the biggest game library and costs the least of the major headsets. The Meta Quest 3 has sharper lenses and display. PlayStation VR2 is the one to buy if you own a PS5, and the Pico 4 Ultra is the main alternative to Meta. Stock of new Meta headsets on Amazon UK was patchy on 18 October 2026, so check who is selling before you buy.

Standalone or console VR?
- Standalone headsets (Meta Quest 3S, Quest 3, Pico 4 Ultra) have the computer built in. You charge them and play anywhere, and most can also connect to a gaming PC for PC VR games.
- PlayStation VR2 plugs into a PS5 and plays PS VR2 games with the console's power. It needs a PS5; Sony also sells a PC adapter for it.
- There is no VR headset for Xbox. Meta sells Quest 3S bundles with an Xbox controller and Game Pass, which let you play Xbox Cloud Gaming on a large virtual screen, not in VR.
Meta Quest 3S vs Quest 3
- Both use the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip and play the same games.
- The Quest 3 has pancake lenses and a sharper 4K+ display (Meta says a nearly 30% resolution leap over Quest 2). The Quest 3S uses Fresnel lenses, which are less sharp at the edges.
- The Quest 3S has 8GB of RAM and full-colour passthrough from two RGB cameras for mixed reality, and Meta quotes 2+ hours of battery.
- 128GB or 256GB: 128GB fills up quickly with big games. If you will install a lot, the extra storage is worth it.

The number one best seller in standalone VR headsets on Amazon UK when we checked. 8GB of RAM, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, full-colour passthrough and access to Meta's whole game library. The catch: on 18 October 2026 Amazon itself was not showing it in stock, so check the seller and the price on the listing.

Is VR suitable for kids?
Meta says its Quest headsets are designed for ages 10 and up, with parent-managed accounts for children under 13 and supervision tools for parents. Check Meta's child safety guidance before setting one up.
Keep sessions short at first, clear the play area of furniture, and use the headset's boundary feature.
For younger children, phone-based VR viewers and kids' VR headsets are sold on Amazon, but they are far simpler than a Quest.
Before Black Friday
Meta Quest bundles are a regular Black Friday deal (27 November 2026), often with a game or credit. Stock was short on Amazon UK in October, so if you see the headset in stock from Amazon at a fair price, it may be worth not waiting.

What is the best VR headset in the UK?
For most people, the Meta Quest 3S: standalone, the biggest game library and the lowest price of the major headsets. The Quest 3 is sharper, and PlayStation VR2 is best if you own a PS5.
Meta Quest 3S vs Quest 3: which should I buy?
Both play the same games on the same chip. The Quest 3 has better lenses and a sharper display; the Quest 3S costs less. For a first headset, the 3S is enough.
Is there a VR headset for Xbox?
No. Xbox consoles do not support VR. Quest 3S bundles with an Xbox controller let you stream Xbox Cloud Gaming to a big virtual screen in the headset.
Does PS VR2 work without a PS5?
It needs a PS5, or a gaming PC with Sony's PS VR2 PC adapter (sold separately). It is not standalone.
Is 128GB enough on the Meta Quest 3S?
For a handful of games, yes. Big games take a lot of space, so if you plan to install many at once, the 256GB model saves you deleting games.
Is Oculus the same as Meta Quest?
Yes. Oculus headsets were renamed Meta Quest. The Quest 3S and Quest 3 are the current models of what used to be the Oculus Quest range.
