Are the Sony WH-1000XM6 Noise Cancelling Headphones worth buying in 2026?

Sony's flagship noise cancelling, now foldable again.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 are worth considering if you commute, fly or work in noisy places and want some of the best noise cancelling you can buy. They use 12 microphones and a new processor, fold into a compact case and are built for all-day comfort. They are expensive, and the previous XM5 is still very good for less.

The 30-second verdict

The XM6 is Sony's top over-ear headphone. The headline is noise cancelling, driven by a new QN3 processor and 12 microphones. Sony has also brought back the folding design that the XM5 dropped, which makes them easier to travel with. If you mainly listen at home in a quiet room, you do not need to spend this much.

What actually matters

Noise cancelling is the reason to buy

This is what separates flagship headphones from cheaper ones. It makes the biggest difference on trains, planes and in offices.

Folding matters for travel

A folding headband means a smaller case in your bag, which was a common complaint about the XM5.

The drawbacks

  • They are expensive.
  • Over-ear headphones get warm in summer and are not ideal for exercise.
  • The improvement over the XM5 is real but not dramatic.

Sony XM6 or XM5?

The XM6 has stronger noise cancelling, more microphones and a folding design. The XM5 is older, does not fold and is usually cheaper. If you find the XM5 at a much lower price, it is still a strong choice.
