The 30-second verdict
ghd has been the default professional straightener in UK salons for years. The Gold sits in the middle of its range: dual-zone heat sensors to keep both plates at an even temperature, and a rounded barrel so it can curl and wave as well as straighten. This set includes a paddle brush and a heat-resistant bag. If you straighten once a month, a cheaper styler will do.

What actually matters
One temperature, by design
ghd sets its stylers to a single temperature it considers best for styling without excess heat. That is simple to use, but there is no lower setting for fine or fragile hair.
Buy from an approved seller
ghd is heavily counterfeited. On Amazon, check the item is sold by ghd or Amazon.
The drawbacks
- No temperature adjustment.
- Standard-width plates are slower on very thick hair than wide plates.
- Any hot styler needs a heat protection spray.
ghd Gold, Original or Platinum+?
The Original is the simplest, with a single sensor. The Gold adds a sensor in each plate. The Platinum+ adds predictive heat control and costs more. All use the same styling temperature.
